Mutt has grown up her whole life in a small country town. Everyone's always known her as Mutt, the nickname her grandfather inadvertently gave her as a youngster that just stuck. To them, she's always been Mutt, the daughter of Darrell O'Fallon one of the local mechanics and they all know everything they need to know about her. When a Vaughn Renfro comes to town, he doesn't know what 'everyone knows' about her. He just meets a young lady who's kind, neighborly and easy on the eyes, and perhaps his first friend in the town he plans to make his home.
In this delightfully understated romance by Author M Mabie, there's a notable absence of many of the over used tropes of the genre. There's no millionaires or billionaires, no rock gods or country singers, no mafiosos, no bikers, not even any ruggedly handsome cowboys. Just an everyday guy who meets an (almost) everyday girl, and a small act of kindness that springboards into a friendship.
Not being a local, Vaughn sees Mutt simply as who she really is, unhindered by the expectations of what 'everyone knows', and in simply being that guy, becomes someone with whom she can share all of the things that everyone never really knew in the first place, and it certainly doesn't hurt that she doesn't have to worry about whether he's actually related to her or not.
Of course, like any couple anywhere, they have their challenges to overcome as their relationship progresses, but again, in a story devoid of the high drama of kidnappings and car wrecks, even that is beautifully mundane, highlighting the wonders that can be found in everyday life, a life that suddenly seems so much richer simply because someone else wants to be part of it with you.
I loved this book. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made my heart hurt with sympathy and my face smile with happiness, and left me wondering who could possibly up next in City Limits book two.

Roots and Wings City Limits Book 1 edition by M Mabie Romance eBooks Reviews
I'm just really getting into this M. Mabie chick and I have to say I think I'm addicted and now I want to read all the Mabie books!
I don't know what I was expecting with this one to be honest. It's been sitting on my kindle for quite awhile now and decided it was time. I was pleasantly surprise. I love that so far this author has been able to write such different stories and nail each one I have read.
This story is a fun, slow burn, small town, just all around good romance. Not a lot of drama which was nice and refreshing.
Mutt our lovely heroine is the epitome of everything I love to read in a heroine. She's real and although she's headstrong we get glimpses of a whole new girl underneath that rough exterior that most people have no idea is there. She's strong but vulnerable at just the right moments. Smart mouthed but sweet. Loving and caring toward those that deserve it and brushes off those that don't matter. Her development after meeting Vaugh was utter perfection. I'm not going to say much about Vaughn except he is pretty swoon worthy and by the end of this book we probably all wish we had a Vaughn in our lives.
All around a good solid story with a great plot. I love books that are just easy to read and don't have a lot of drama. It makes that slow burn between the characters so much more enjoyable and real
Roots and Wings is a southern, contemporary romantic comedy by M. Mabie. It’s set in the town of Wynne and showcases the small town life where everyone knows everyone and their business. It’s sweet and pure, at its finest. Sounds simple enough right? Well not exactly. Roots and Wings pulls emotions from you that you wouldn’t expect from the type of book without flash and circumstance or the dark storylines. It’s real life, real world, deep emotion and when written in a fictional story… that can be a powerful tool.
Roots and Wings focuses on the characters Mutt (nickname) and Vaughn. Mutt was born and raised in Wynne and Vaughn is the new guy in town. For a small town, a new resident is a big deal and the ladies in the supermarket shared their fill of gossip at the new dentists’ arrival.
Mutt is a tomboy who works in her dad’s shop, loves a cold beer after work, and spends her spare time fishing in all her favorite honey holes (My partner in crime, Dottie, says I need to explain this to the Yankees… A honey hole is like untouched waters, a great fishing spot people don’t know about. lol). She’s lived her whole life labeled by her nickname and maybe lost herself a little under the perspective of a town who has known her for her whole life. Vaughn’s arrival shakes things up within her personal life but also internally for Mutt.
"Quote" Should I tell him I hate broccoli? Was it too soon for that? S***. What was I thinking? Too soon for broccoli? "End Quote"
Roots and wings is sweet, charming, and innocent. It’s simple in terms of drama and chaos but rich with feelings and emotion. I teared up a couple of times at the level of depth captured in the development of the relationship between these two characters. I got choke up more than a few times on the way Vaughn wanted to do things right, the way he treated Mutt, and the level of concern and protection he had for her. Their chemistry was awesome and had elements of both friendship and love. Mutt’s journey from a girl smitten to a woman in love was relatable on levels that touch every emotion that women go through during those uncertain and often awkward moments of the beginning stages of dating.
"Quote" For the first time, I wanted to impress a man. Not because I wanted his business, or simply to warm my bed, but I wanted a man to desire me, and even if I hated to admit it, I wanted to be treated like I was special. Like I was beautiful.
And, there in that garage, he’d done just that.
I felt, more than anything, that he desired me. All of me. And I wanted more of it. "End Quote"
Her insecurities and desires hit a special place in my heart. You often hear woman in our community complaining about a whinny female lead (which I hate anyways because I’m not a fan of character bashing) but Mutt’s insecurities portray in a way that’s anything but sulky or bratty. She’s a real woman trying to navigate the missteps, lessons, and self-doubt that often arise when we are unsure of how someone else sees us or feels. Her story and history pulled at my heartstrings. The way people treated her and what become her normality was heartbreaking. They way Vaughn saw through the simple commonality of it was beautiful. He saw it for what it was… wrong.
"Quote" Men wanted someone delicate they could take care of and protect. They wanted someone who made them feel powerful and needed.
And I’d never be a woman who couldn’t take care of herself. A girl who couldn’t survive if left alone.
I’d been left alone before.
…
That’s what stuck in my head. I never wanted to feel like I was left lost. Wandering around, needing someone else to save me.
I could save myself. "End Quote"
Vaughn is an ace of spades. He’s patient, protective, and quite the sweet talker when he wants to be (The type of sweet talker who is saying these things because he means them and not because it’s what she wants to hear.). Never thought you’d retire your rock stars for a dentist, did you? Well lets not get carried away we don’t have to completely retire our musicians, actors, or alpha bad boys but this dentist is a great addition to the mix of book boyfriends. He’s yearned for a life where he can put down roots in a town he would be proud to call home and that’s what brings him to Wynne and to Mutt.
"Quote" She was a woman who knew more duty than desire, more perseverance than passion, and more acquaintance than affection
I wanted to show her more. I wanted to be the man that could handle her strong will and headstrong ways. I wanted to be what she needed, what she wanted. "End Quote"
I received an ARC of Roots and Wings because I was interested when I first saw the beautiful cover and my interest was easily kept after the book description. I’ve read the Bait Series by M. Mabie and this story seemed so different from that series that I wanted to see how an author who caught me with one type of story could reel me in with something so different. I am beyond thrilled with the results and with Mabie’s diversity within her craft. Don’t put her in a box because from what I’ve seen she’ll easily smash her way out of it with her originality, fresh storylines, and characters that make you feel. Through the good, bad, and ugly she has a way to keep you hooked, keep you reading, and keep you invested. FIVE big stars for this small town story!
